What is
a Sensory Diet?
The multisensory ( touch -light and deep pressure, movement, visual, auditory, vestibular, taste, etc. ) experiences that a person normally seeks on a daily basis to satisfy their sensory appetite. A Sensory Diet should be a planned and scheduled activity program that an occupational therapist develops to help a person become more self-regulated and organized. Specific kinds of activities provide the nervous system with physical, sensory ways of calming and organizing.
-
Who can
benefit from a Sensory Diet?
Many children and adults can benefit from an organized sensory diet. Those
students at school who use the sensory diet stations may include (but
not be limited to) children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pervasive
Developmental Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Anxiety disorders, sensory
defensiveness, hypo-responsiveness (under active), hyper-responsiveness (over
reactive), anger management issues or organizational issues. Many of
our students need sensory input throughout their day so they can better regulate their
behavior and emotions. Students need to learn that seeking this input is OK but
it needs to be done in an appropriate and structured way.
-
Should a student do ALL of the Sensory Diet Stations?
Not necessarily. Carefully choose those stations that will provide the type of sensory input the child needs. For example, proprioceptive activities such as push ups or wall pushes can work two ways. If a child needs to become calmer and organized, then structured, proprioceptive input will help. On the other hand, if a child needs to increase his level of alertness, proprioceptive input (especially the trampoline) will help raise his alertness levels.
-
If a student participates in the Sensory Diet Stations, would he need any other sensory diet activities throughout his school day?
Probably yes, depending on the severity of his needs. I continue to offer fidgets, chewing gum, "chewy" types of devices or foods and "wiggle" seats in the classrooms. Take a look at my TidBit page for more classroom suggestions.
-
How often should a student go through the Sensory Diet Stations?
Sensory Diet Stations provides an organized approach to receiving sensory input on a daily basis. Most students participate in the Sensory Diet Stations 1-2 times per school day. It helps the student become more independent and responsible for meeting their own sensory needs in a school setting.
